GLOSSARY OF ROAD TRANSPORT
AIS Vehicle Tracking System. It is a system in which vehicles are tracked via satellite using GPS and GPRS technologies.
Warehouse It is the place where the goods are kept under the supervision and control of the customs administration, with the declaration given to the customs administration and allowed to be opened in accordance with the provisions of the law.
Transfer Center They are regional processing centers where incoming loads/cargoes are unloaded, outgoing loads are loaded according to the destination, cargoes are stored for short periods of time during the day, and load/cargo transfers between vehicles are made.
Toolbox It is a tool bag containing hand tools (hammer, screwdriver, etc. ) and a flashlight that can be used to make small repairs.
Luggage Tarpaulins of trucks etc. It is the compartment located above the driver’s cabin in the truck bed, where people can stack their belongings, such as items, and which allows the height of the load to be easily expressed
Press Tonnage It is also expressed as press tonnage. It means the load limit (maximum load amount) of the vehicle.
Fifth Wheel It is a part mounted on the chassis of tractors, along the length of the vehicle, and is designed to securely lock the connecting element called king pin of semi-trailers.
CMR It is a road transport document. CMR Certificate is a transport document issued in accordance with the International CMR Agreement for transportation by truck.
Tow Vehicle It is a motor land vehicle with at least two axles used to tow semi-trailers.
Permanent Vehicle It is a spot vehicle that carries out continuous transportation
Tare It is the empty weight of the transport container.
Damper Case Thanks to its special hydraulic equipment for trucks, it is a body type that can be inclined at 45 degrees to unload the bulk cargo inside the box.
Damper Semi Trailer system that works with hydraulic equipment to incline 45 degrees and unloads the load itself. Unlike trucks, there are also dumper semi-trailers that can dump the material on them to the right or left.
Warehouse It is a place suitable for storing nationalized goods in open or closed areas.
Axle The metal part on which the wheels rotate. Those with single tires are referred to as single axles, and those with double wheels are referred to as double axles.
Bulk Cargo Cargo not contained in any packaging. For example , coal, iron powder, etc.
FEU Unit equivalent to 40 feet. It is the unit of measurement used to indicate the capacities of containers. 1 FEU is 40 ft (length) × 8 ft (width) × 9 ft (height) or 12.192 m (length) × 2.44 m (width) × 2.59 m (height) in metric terms and has a volume of approximately 67.5 m³.
Fictitious These are customs areas inside the factory.
Refrigerated It is a road vehicle designed and manufactured for the transportation of foodstuffs, medicines and some chemicals that are sensitive to heat changes, with wall thicknesses and insulation values varying depending on the sensitivity of the transported material to heat changes, and equipped with a cooling unit.
Gauge These are the measurements that determine the length, width and height of vehicles in order to ensure their safe navigation on the highway, loaded or unloaded.
Temporary Storage Location It is a place where the goods are allowed to be temporarily stored by the customs administration until they are subjected to a customs-approved transaction or use after they are presented to customs.
Pass Certificate It is the document that indicates the cargo carried between the departure customs and the destination customs in international transportation, and enables the passage through the customs of the exit and destination countries and entry into the country where the cargo will be unloaded. TIR carnets are also included in the transit document.
Customs Enforcement Officer He is the officer to whom the customs declarations of the goods in customs and bonded areas are delivered after the inspection officer. In addition, these officers are given the authority to seal and open sealed materials such as containers.
Intermodal Transportation It is a mode of transportation using two or more modes of transportation with the same transportation vehicle or container, and in which the loads in the vehicle or container are not subjected to any handling during mode changes.
Loading limit It is the maximum load weight or number of passengers and servants that a vehicle or vehicle can carry safely and specified in the manufacturing standard.
Jumbo Semi Trailer It is a semi-trailer with dimensions of 13.60m x 2.45m x 2.65m, a gross volume of 90m3, and two-storey models are also available.
K1 One or more self-owned vehicles must obtain from the Ministry of Transport.
Combined Transportation That is not intermodal but is made by using more than one transportation vehicle (train, truck, etc. ) connected to each other.

Van These are land transportation vehicles with a maximum permissible loaded weight not exceeding 3.5 tons and are manufactured to carry goods or loads and have a body depending on the type of load they will carry.
Weighbridge It is a measuring device used by vehicles to be weighed when they are empty and after they are loaded.
Closed Case It is a semi-trailer class that has closed sides and roof and can be loaded only by opening the rear cover.
Sliding Curtain Semi Trailer It is a semi-trailer whose side surfaces and ceiling are covered with a curtain system, and which can be loaded from both the side and the top of the body by opening the curtains.
Fishbone Semi Trailer (Container chassis semi trailer) Designed and manufactured for the purpose of transporting containers, it has a skeletal chassis and a container lock ( twist) placed at the end of the cross-sections in the number and distance appropriate to the type of container it will carry. It is a semi-trailer vehicle with at least one axle and a lock ).
Kingpin It is a piece made of forged steel that connects the fifth wheel of the semi-trailer tractor. It is manufactured in different sizes according to the carrying capacity of the semi-trailer.
Car Rental It is rented completely with its driver by making a contract, for a certain monthly rent and km. These are vehicles that operate on a percentage of fuel per head.
Commission Money taken from the driver of the vehicle who accepts the load, partly for side income and partly to prevent the driver from taking the load.
Broker He is the person who finds the vehicle suitable for the load to the person giving the load and receives a commission from the vehicle owner.
Commission Invoice Invoice issued for the commission received.
Bill of lading It is a cargo transport bill that contains information about the content of the cargo carried.
Container They are standard metal load cases that are resistant to all kinds of atmospheric conditions, are used especially in intermodal transportation, can be easily handled and stacked on top of each other. Types called 20, 40 and 45 are the most common. This classification is made according to the varying lengths of the containers.
Container Lock It is the mechanism used by vehicles that lift or carry containers to fix the containers at their corners.
L2 Certificate It is a type of authorization certificate that companies operating international logistics must have, in accordance with the Highway Transportation Law. Unless violations specified in the provisions of the law are committed, the validity period of the document is 5 years.
LOW-BED Or trailers can carry , such as heavy construction equipment or special project loads, which are outside the standards according to international and domestic road transportation regulations.
Mega Semi Trailer They are semi-trailers with dimensions of 13.60 m x 2.50 m x 3.00 m and a volume of 102 m³.
Certificate of professional competence It is the document received by those who carry out activities within the scope of the Highways Regulation, have received the vocational qualification training stipulated in this regulation and/or are successful in the exams.
Carrier A person who deals with transportation.
Freight This is the shipping cost excluding VAT.
Order No. It is an order given for the clearance of goods coming from abroad from customs in return for a bill of lading.
Special Permit Certificate It is a document issued to vehicles with foreign license plates in order to transport Turkish export products and to replace the transit document, without requiring a transit document in transportation.
Special Cargo Transport Document Special Load Transport Permit is obtained from the General Directorate of Highways (Relevant Regional Directorates) in accordance with the 33rd article of the Highway Traffic Law, the 66th and 128th articles of the Highway Traffic Regulation, for the transportation of loads that are special in terms of weight and size and that cannot be transported by other transportation systems and that must be carried beyond the transportation limit. It is mandatory to obtain a certificate and carry out the transportation in accordance with the principles in this permit.
Palette It is a platform used in storage and shipment, produced from various materials and on which the goods are placed.
Loading Compass / Loading Quotation Document proving that the vehicle receiving work from the KN Office documents its agreement with the office employees, the commission it gives and proves that it has arrived at the company from which it will receive its cargo for loading.
Piece Load They are partial loads that are not in the form of bulk cargo such as wheat and coal and cannot be placed in containers, can also be defined as general cargo, and can be in different package types.
Partial Distribution the use of the vehicle’s carrying capacity by allocating it to more than one customer , or the orders of the serviced customers that need to go to more than one point.
Psychotechnical Test psycho -technical evaluation is to measure and evaluate the mental and psychomotor ability levels of drivers that enable them to drive safely, with objective methods. It consists of evaluating driving skills, driving attitudes towards traffic and personality in terms of traffic psychology. The validity period of the document is 5 years.
R2 Certificate In accordance with the Highway Transportation Law, it is a type of authorization document that companies that organize international transportation must have. Unless there are violations specified in the provisions of the law, the validity period of the document is 5 years.
Ramp It is the area used to facilitate the process of taking materials into or being shipped from the warehouse.
Ring It is a system in which the same or different loads are picked up from various points by a vehicle within the framework of a program and delivered to one or more points and the empty containers are collected during deliveries or the empty containers are collected and returned by following the reverse route after all deliveries are completed.
Roll Carrier Semi Trailer It is a semi-trailer manufactured to carry loads of similar shapes and sizes, especially sheet metal in roll form. The space in the form of a round cylinder at the base, opened along the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, ensures that the load is supported from both sides when loaded onto the vehicle, thus ensuring that the measures to be taken to fix the load on the vehicle can be taken more easily.
Platform Semi Trailer It is a semi-trailer with a flat floor and no side covers. It is used to transport materials such as pipes, iron and containers. Its dimensions may vary depending on the container dimensions.
Shipment Note Official document stating the name, amount, freight cost and the issued invoice number of the cargo on the vehicle. It is a document that must be issued and kept with the goods during the transportation of commercial goods from one place to another, in order to be able to control the goods in terms of tax legislation during transportation.
Salvage It is the financial value assessed by the insurance expert for damaged products.
Contract Vehicle These are vehicles belonging to someone else, which the holder of the authorization certificate will operate under his/her own title and responsibility, based on a notarized transportation revenue sharing or rental agreement. They work per trip or YTL /ton. Contracted vehicles that work for a fixed monthly fee are complete rental vehicles.
Ratchet Strap It is the general name of the polyester strips that pass over the load, are fixed to the surface on which the load will be carried, and are used to fix the load by stretching it with a tensioning mechanism known as purse seine.
Spot Vehicle It is the general name of the vehicles that are free-running and have a one-time transportation agreement.
Sousplan It is a method generally used in land and sea transportation, and the customs clearance of the material is carried out on the vehicle carrying out the transportation.
Driver A person who drives and manages a motor vehicle or vehicle on the highway.
Urban Transport These are transportations carried out within the municipal borders and the adjacent area.
Swap Body Swap body is the name of containers that are made too thin to be stacked on top of each other and lifted from the top by the stacker . They are manufactured from extremely lightweight materials to reduce initial purchase costs and keep long-term fuel costs to a minimum. Its dimensions are standard ISO container dimensions so that it can be loaded into other container carrying vehicles. Thanks to its foldable legs, generally located at four corners, it can change the vehicle it is carried in without the need for any loading/unloading system.
Full Trailer It is pulled by a truck and is designed and manufactured according to the characteristics of the load it will carry, has at least one axle and has a drawbar, turntable, hook, etc. attached to the truck . It is a vehicle connected by a connection device identified by names.
Subcontractor It is a legal entity that carries out a certain transportation job on behalf of another company, with vehicles it owns as a result of a contract or is affiliated with it in another way.
Transport Waybill It is a document issued by those engaged in transportation activities, in accordance with the provisions of the relevant legislation, for one or more consignments and goods or cargo belonging to the sender, transported at the same time in the same vehicle.
Vehicle Certificate It refers to the document issued as an annex to the authorization certificate, separate from the authorization certificate that lists the nature and number of vehicles that the authorization certificate holder will use.
Vehicle Card Showing that a vehicle is registered only in the vehicle document annexed to a certificate of authorization and that it can be operated under this document; It is a document containing -the commercial title of the authorization certificate holder, -the type and number of the authorization certificate, -the validity period of the vehicle card, -the brand, type, model, license plate and color of the vehicle.
Vehicle Scale It refers to a vehicle consisting of at least one towing trailer and at most two towed trailers connected together to travel as a unit on the highway.
Tilt Semi Trailer It is a semi-trailer type whose side surfaces are covered with a partially extendable awning system.
TEU Unit equivalent to 20 feet. It is the unit of measurement used to indicate the capacities of containers. 1 TEU is 20 ft (length) × 8 ft (width) × 9 ft (height) or 6.10 m (length) × 2.44 m (width) × 2.59 m (height) in metric terms and has a volume of approximately 38.5 m³. A 40′ container is also expressed as 2 TEU. However, 45′ containers are also measured as 2 TEU.

In our country, transportation vehicles consisting of semi-trailers and tractors are called TIR.
Truck Carnet It is the carnet used within the TIR contract system and printed by the IRU (International Road Transport Union) and made available to member countries.
Public Transport Waybill The vehicle is transported by the owner in one go; A delivery note prepared for the distribution of one or more goods with multiple points/customers, by listing the destination points/customers and the corresponding goods, is called a public transportation delivery note.
Transit Transport It refers to passenger or goods transportation that starts in any country and ends in another country after passing through the territory of at least one country, and includes transportation carried out through countries other than the starting and ending countries.
UBAK It is the creation of an integrated transportation system in which transportation is carried out economically and technically effectively and quickly, with fleets that are safer and compatible with environmental standards, by including the social dimensions of international transportation. It is an international organization that was founded in 1953 by 17 countries, including Turkey as a founding country, and today has approximately 50 member countries. Activities in our country are carried out by the Ministry of Transport, and laws, legislation and practices related to standardization are carried out by this institution.
Fee Schedule It refers to the document that regulates transportation activities in terms of fees in regular transportation and is mandatory to comply with.
Licence of authorization It is a document issued by the Ministry that gives work permits to real and legal persons who will operate within the scope of the road transport regulations.
Domestic Transportation These are transportations that start from any point of any province and end at any point of another province, or between two points within the borders of a province, regardless of their distance.
Semi-Trailer It is a load-carrying road vehicle that is pulled by a tow vehicle equipped with an engine, has at least one axle, is designed and manufactured specifically for the characteristics of the load it will carry, and is connected to the vehicle it is towed through a connection system called king pin.
